Basket Fires should be chosen with expert advice to comply with Building Regulations. Whilst attractive looking, basket fires are very inefficient and demanding on flue capacity. Few people, even gas fitters, are aware of the serious restrictions regarding the size of fireplace opening imposed by these fires. To install a basket fire into a modern house with a typical 8" dia. clay-lined flue, the maximum fireplace opening allowed will be less than 500mm (20") square. Not the spacious inglenook people are invisaging! Additionally, whether gas or woodburning, they need a huge amount of ventilation, usually in the form of a large airbrick through the wall. These fires are so troublesome that we will not install them. If the customer still wants one despite our advice, we will sell them one but they have to find their own installer.
