There are two ways of avoiding the high cost of gas central-heating; Boiler Stoves and free-standing Central-heating Boilers.
Boiler stoves take up no more room than a "dry" stove and can be fitted in the lounge but have the dis-advantage that they cannot be run without the central-heating.
Free-standing central-heating boilers need extra space but are independent, allowing a stove to be used in the lounge when only that room needs to be warmed.

Whichever the boiler, potential savings are huge and the volatility of gas prices is avoided. Additionally, if wood is burned, the "carbon footprint" of the home is drastically reduced because wood, "the original bio-mass fuel" is carbon neutral.
